the driving force behind today's sale surge. the day after christmas and all through the malls discounts galore, just look at them all. 50% off, 60% off. sales everywhere, some up to 75% off. why are so many shoppers here the day after christmas? there's a lot of theories, one they are exchanging. others are spending gift cards. retailers are hoping that these shoppers are actually spending more than they are returning. >> admittedly this mother and daughter came to spend. >> actually spending more money. she's spending her christmas money. >> it's estimated $28 billion in gift cards were sold nationwide. a record. factor in good weather of a three-day weekend the day after christmas is as much about

personal information on the internet. released their name, credit card number, expires date. >> the information is a treasure trove for people who want to commit identity theft. the list of users is interesting. includes security teams, banks and government agencies. >> they analyze global intelligence and security for corporations, police and the military. the company declined interview requests but the ceo said they are working closely with law enforcement. the hackers claim to be part of the group calling themselves anonymous. it linked this attack to the effort to free bradley manning, the private suspected of releasing documents to wikileaks. a member of anonymous described

before killing himself was dressed as santa claus. officers responded to the apartment in the suburb of grapevine yesterday. two handguns were found near the bodies of four women and three men. police believe the gunman opened fire while his relatives were opening presents. a news conference is scheduled for tomorrow to christmas morning fire that killed three children and their grandparents in connecticut. it happened near dawn. the multistory home was being renovated. it was leveled meaning investigators likely know how to fire started. no doubt, not every christmas wish was granted this year. for a family in the south bay they hope for a miracle. the return of their dog who they are convinced was caught up in a prechristmas break in.
